The Heritage Fair Hosts Many Great Musicians and band

Big Sound Jazz and Blues in concert

Jade Lumbewe

Sydney vocalist, Jade Lumbewe composes jazz-inspired popular music for her 5-piece band. She is a dynamic performer able to transport audiences into her headspace with her warm personality and amusing stage persona.

With a pure yet appealingly raw tone, her voice displays an agility that can command the most challenging of tunes to the sweetest of songs.

Having completed her jazz studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2008, Jade studied for three years with internationally acclaimed vocalist, Kerrie Biddell.

Jade has performed her original material at Sydney’s most notable live music venues including The Basement, The Vanguard, The Brass Monkey, Candy’s Apartment and Soup Plus.

Her music is lyrical and harmonically rich with clever narratives throughout her songs. The importance of storytelling and connection with the audience is equalled to the importance of self expression through improvisation and creating chemistry on the bandstand.

Her music incorporates interesting compositional techniques, changing time signatures and feels while still appealing to lovers of popular music.

Jade’s inspiration stems from observing the uninhibited nature of other artists. Her style is a hybrid of many forces, influenced by Billie Holiday, Kurt Elling, The Beatles, Bic Runga, Bjork, and Stevie Wonder and has been described as a ‘jazz inspired Fiona Apple’.

Her interest in singing was sparked at the age of nine when she played the role of Marta in a community production of ‘The Sound of Music’ and has a strong musical background in piano, saxophone and cello.

Jade manages her own jazz ensemble and fronts the Sydney Metro Big Band and The Rhino Factory Big Band. In 2007 she sang the national anthem for the Prime Minister, John Howard; recorded with Live and Swingin’ at ABC studios for James Valentine; and provided backing vocals for Sydney soul/hip-hop band, Kid Confucius during their Stripes album national tour. In 2007 she also recorded her first EP, ‘Why September’ with Jade Lumbewe Band. She is currently arranging her original material for Judy Bailey’s 19-piece big band, Jazz Connection.

Jade’s distinctive energy is ever evolving and her songs are the musical translation of her mind’s diary
